Sleep Is a Weight Loss Variable

Short sleep raises ghrelin, lowers leptin, and reliably increases next-day intake. It is the most underrated lever in any weight plan.

People track calories and steps meticulously and then sleep five hours. The hormonal effect of that is larger than most of the tracking.

The hormone side

Restricted sleep raises ghrelin, which drives hunger, and lowers leptin, which signals fullness. Controlled studies show measurable increases in next-day intake, concentrated in calorie-dense food.

The insulin side

Even a few nights of short sleep measurably reduces insulin sensitivity in healthy adults. Poor sleep does not only make you hungrier, it makes your body handle the extra intake worse.

What to change first

  • Keep a consistent wake time, including weekends.
  • Stop caffeine eight hours before bed rather than four.
  • Keep the room genuinely cold and genuinely dark.
  • Get outside within an hour of waking.
